
Reaction games strip everything else away. No inventory, no dialogue, no plan, just a thing arriving and a decision that has to be made before it does. It is the purest loop in the medium and also the least forgiving, because there is nowhere to hide a mistake.

The Dutch physiologist Franciscus Donders published a paper in 1868 arguing that mental events take measurable time. His method was subtraction. Measure how long somebody takes to respond to a single signal with a single response, which he called the simple reaction. Then measure a task in which several signals map to several responses, the choice reaction. The difference between the two, he reasoned, is roughly the time that the choosing itself consumed. Later psychology has picked plenty of holes in the assumption that mental stages can be cleanly subtracted from one another, but the basic move survived and the framing is still taught.
Under laboratory conditions, simple visual reaction times in healthy young adults are commonly reported somewhere in the region of a fifth of a second, with responses to sound landing a little quicker than responses to light. Adding options pushes the figure up. Hick's law, from work by W. E. Hick in 1952 and Ray Hyman the following year, describes that rise as roughly logarithmic in the number of equally likely alternatives, so moving from two choices to four costs you less than doubling would suggest. Anyone who has designed a menu, a control scheme or a fighting-game input has met this relationship, whether or not they knew its name.
A web page makes a poor stopwatch. What you see is quantised to the display's refresh, about 16.7 milliseconds apart on a 60 Hz panel, so the moment a shape appears is already smeared. Browsers additionally reduce the resolution of their high-precision clocks on purpose, a mitigation widely adopted after timing-based side-channel attacks were demonstrated, which means the numbers are coarser than they look. Add the input device's polling interval, the compositor and whatever the operating system happens to be doing, and the error bars comfortably swallow the effect you were hoping to see.
Which is precisely why the quiz above does not pretend to time anything. Nothing on the page is clocking your hands, no reflex is being sampled, and the tier you land in is drawn entirely from what you told us about your own habits. Where a title in this part of the site waves a percentage around, read it as showmanship rather than measurement. A proper reaction test needs controlled hardware, a decent number of trials and somebody willing to discard the attempt where you sneezed. That is a real limitation rather than false modesty, but a description of how you behave when a game speeds up is still worth having, and it happens to be the part you can change.
