
Take the names off a world map and a lot of confident knowledge evaporates. We remember countries as labels sitting in roughly the right place rather than as shapes with neighbours, coasts and edges that touch other edges.
This round works the other way round. Every question describes a country by what surrounds it, what it lost, or what it holds a record for, and asks you to supply the name. No map required, though you may find yourself drawing one in your head somewhere around the third question. That is rather the point.

A sphere cannot be flattened without stretching something. That is not a technological limitation but a proved result: Gauss showed in 1827 that a curved surface cannot be laid flat while preserving distances, which means every world map on paper distorts area, shape, distance or direction, and usually several at once.
Gerardus Mercator's 1569 projection chose to preserve angles, so a compass bearing drawn as a straight line stays true. That made it superb for navigation and dreadful for comparing sizes, because the scale inflates as you move away from the equator. Greenland ends up looking a match for Africa when Africa is roughly fourteen times larger. Equal-area projections such as Gall-Peters fix the sizes and pay for it with badly stretched shapes. Compromise projections split the difference, which is why National Geographic used the Robinson projection from 1988 and switched to the Winkel Tripel a decade later. The Winkel Tripel is a compromise of the same kind, chosen because it holds area, direction and distance errors down together rather than removing any single one.
Coastline rankings shift between sources, and the reason is mathematical rather than sloppy. Lewis Fry Richardson noticed that the measured length of a border depends on the length of the ruler used, and Benoit Mandelbrot turned the observation into a famous 1967 paper asking how long the coast of Britain is. Shorten the ruler and you capture more inlets, and the total climbs without settling.
Canada tops most published lists at somewhere over two hundred thousand kilometres, largely because of its Arctic islands, and Norway and Indonesia trade places behind depending on whether fjords and small islands are counted. A precise-looking figure in an almanac is really a figure plus an unstated decision about resolution.
Seven multiple-choice questions are a game, not a geography examination. Nothing here has been normed, no group has been tested to produce a comparison, and with four options each you can reach a middling total on luck alone. A high score means you knew some countries; a low one means these particular seven were not the ones you happened to know.
The facts underneath are the durable part, and every one of them can be checked against an atlas or a national statistics office in a couple of minutes.
